The circus we know today originated from the UK approximately 250 years ago however, this idea began in early Rome with their circus. This was vastly different to what we know, it featured gladiatorial fights and races normally finishing with the death of a competitor. They also featured early forms of trained animals for entertainment.

Philip Astley (1742-1814), considered the creator of modern circus, was a master of horse trick riding, so much so that he opened a theatre at his riding school. The purpose was to show off his trick riding for the people as entertainment. This was the first technical circus.

The circus was also very progressive, it opened ideas of equality in race and gender. Despite being female many performers were greatly appreciated during a time where equality wasn't present. In fact one of the biggest circus owners was a black man called Pablo Fanque. He was originally a butler however left when his skill with horse riding was recognised. Eventually he became really successful in the field of the circus due to his intellect and talent.

Over time the circus developed into the shape we know. Tents came around for portability, trains were used to transport them across the US, it became known as something for the people. Soon art developed from the circus in the form of painting, photography, costumes, posters and other forms of media.
