Initially Margate started as a small fishing port however by 1767 it became a seaside port due to the flock of visitors from places such as London. By 1800 the town's population was 4771. It was a widely popular tourist destination until commercial flights abroad.

The Turner Gallery

The Turner opened in 2011 and since then it has been considered as the catalyst behind the regeneration of Margate through the arts. It helped to grow the art scene in Margate. It was built on the site where JMW Turner used to visit, in fact you can even see the scenery that inspired some of his work from the Turner Gallery. The architect behind the gallery even purposely designed the building so at certain times of day and at a certain angle it would look like a painting. The Gallery is a home to a wide range of artists and their work.
