Propaganda Project Brief
Our task was to choose a fairytale from a selection and almost recreate it. We had to redesign the plot to fit a more modern theme or a common theme of propaganda. Inspired by the book Animal Farm, I decided to change three little pigs but into a representation of the Soviet Union and Russia in the cold war. It was a dark and slightly humourous take on the ideas of communism and how it was displayed by the Soviets.
After much discussion we settled on a final version of this retelling of the three little pigs. It is called Three Russian Pigs.
Here is the story:
Three Russian Pigs
Once upon a time there were three Russian pigs. One pig, Abram, built a house of straw whilst the second pig, Bogdan built a house of sticks. They built their houses very quickly and then sang and drank vodka together. The third pig, Viktor, was unsatisfied with just straw and sticks.
The local officer of the Soviet Union, a wolf called Vadislaw, visited the Russian pigs to check if their homes were in accordance with communist regulation. Vadislaw blew down Abram’s door “Little pig, your comrade Viktor has informed us you have been hiding extra rations from the Union” “Please no, we are starving” squealed Abram, his family cowering behind him. They were all sent away with their house claimed by the Union, never to be seen again.
Vadislaw blew down Bogdan’s door “Little pig, your comrade Viktor has informed us you have been hiding an enemy of the state” “Please sir, we have done no such thing. We are innocent” squealed Bogdan. It indeed turned out he was hiding an enemy of the state. Bogdan was later found floating in a river, his house also claimed by the Union.
Viktor built a house out of bricks, a gift for selling out his dear lifelong friends Abram and Bogdan. He dined on a fine meal of extra rations and vodka for his patriotic services to the glorious union. He lived happily ever after.
