This work was focused on making illustrations based on an assigned quotation for a book, this book takes a look at further education with the Shakespeare play The Tempest. The quote I was assigned was actually from Wizard of Oz, the song Somewhere over the rainbow to be specific.

"Someday, I wish upon a star

Wake me up where the clouds are far

behind me

Where trouble melts like lemon drops

High above the chimney top

That's where you'll find me."

Initially I struggled to come up with concepts, mine felt too unrelated or didn't work as this illustration needed to be in black and white. However I managed to develop 4 initial ideas based upon certain aspects of the quote, specifically stars and the context of Wizard of Oz.

I really liked the idea of taking the stars into the aspect of space, so I developed this further.

I especially liked the idea of the hopeful dream in the reflection of the helmet.

I also took a more detailed look at the Wizard of Oz influence.

My personal favourite after the different thumbnails was the space themed one, I liked the modern twist on a quote from Wizard of Oz. It took literal aspects from the quote but in a slightly different way. I decided that my final illustration would be a lone astronaut helmet in the middle of an ocean, the reflection in the visor being of stars.

This was the final drawing I made on the day, unfortunately due to time restraints it lacked a lot of the details I planned for and personally turned out poorly. However, it gave me some good practice of analogue based work.

However, I wasn't satisfied with this. I went out and redrew this from scratch, this time starting on the stormy ocean and then the helmet. These were the initial sketches and a digital mock-up:

This was my final illustration, to make the space design in the visor I used a combination of a black marker and tipex. Compared to the initial piece I liked this significantly more as it had a lot more features and detail. Whilst I would like to add a lot of detail and make this piece better, I was happy with what I could do in the limited time.

Update (30/3/20):

A few weeks after this short task I received an email from the author of this book, this email confirmed that I managed to get into the book.
