I took a variety of shots for the final outcome, multiple of the same with slightly different camera settings and others trying to experiment with different small ideas. At the end of the day it was difficult compared to a normal shoot as it was in my room with no models or help, I had to do it all by myself. This made getting more complicated angles difficult. By the end I took approximately 50 shots of the mask shown here:
The main issue was due to the shape and size of the mask, the light would only reach 1/3 of the way across the mask on average. I tended to angle my shots so that the light would hit the white of the mask, it wasn't as visible on the black. Some shots also made use of glasses to give a blurred look or red plastic to give the entire image bold red tones.
Here are some individual shots that I didn't select to be used as the final work
As for editing I wanted two things, to make sure that the colours were bold and to show the details of the mask. I found that increasing sharpness and clarity helped to make the mask appear to be made from wood. I tried to make subtle edits to just increase the quality of my work instead of going overboard with edits. However, this approach changed for the two red images I chose, instead I wanted to give them a very different atmosphere to the other shots, these had high film grain and saturation to give a very static-like effect, this was actually slightly inspired by my idea to use a TV in my original video plan.
Here is a side by side of the original unedited photos with the edits I made:
